This is Weasley, the quite inofficial mascot of Florencetime. These pictures are called "Longitude of Florence", because they are geotagged at the Florentine prime meridian 11° 15' East of Greenwich.

Basic Thick Socks

Here's a pair of basic socks - two worsted weight yarns knit together with 32 sts on size 7 (I think) dpns. I'm bored with these socks though so I started another pair of the Log Cabin Socks from Handknit Holidays. I really hope to update the scrunchie sock pattern and get you that list of worsted weight sock patterns soon.

So far I've sent $210.83 to the New Mexico rabbit rescuers - that is half my May Ravelry earnings along with all of my Amazon and Lulu earnings for May. (Obviously with such enormous earnings I'm right on track to becoming a millionaire by 2010!!!) All my patterna nd booklet sale earnings through the end of July will go to them - I figure it will be around $400 more.

Today I want to introduce Hana Medicon's Amigo Series.


This is our Model Dee. She is wearing Hana Medicon's Amigo Violet.

These lenses are really pretty and have a black ring around it. The coloured part is fuzzy violet with no particular design to it, making your eyes appear gloomy.

The Amigo series are good for both sophisticated and cute look.

I don't know why I by the cats toys. Seriously. I could spend hundreds of bucks at PetSmart and they would much rather play with the cardboard boxes I get deliveries in. Spooky has claimed this box, and she won't let the other cat's use it. She even eats her food in it. I call it her "Kitty-Cat-Hotel."

Easy Scrunchie Socks

Thanks to everyone who helped me decipher what color mauve really is. The answer is who knows??? The world of color names is a mysterious one.

Now when I said I was making a pair of socks in Cascade 220 that was the color of Pepto-Bismol, everyone probably guessed the color exactly.



These are the Easy Scrunchie socks (pattern in previous blog post) knit in size 6 dpns instead of size 7. I realized I forgot to put the gauge in the pattern last time so I'll add that for both sizes and add the pattern as a PDF on Ravelry for those of you who prefer to work from PDFs. This is a busy week but I'll get to it as soon as I can.



I've decided to devote the summer to knitting myself some really thick socks. I've found a few interesting patterns online so I'll post a set of links for those of you who also like socks from worsted weight yarn.

GEO's Tears

Good Night Everyone!

Some circle lenses have designs on them such as Tears, Butterflies and Stars.

One of my favourites is the Tears series, which, like its name says, has a tearful effect. They make your eyes glisten and look sparkly.


This is Elizabeth. She is wearing GEO's Tears Brown. They are also available in Gray.

These lenses are good for days when you don't want too wear much colour on your eyes.

New Russian art, AD 1909

These color photographs were all taken in the Russian Empire between 1909 and 1918.





Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii was a Russian photographer born in 1863. After studying chemistry with Mendeleev and later with Adolf Miethe - one of the crucial figures in the invention of color photography - Gorskii started developing his own techniques and processes of color photography, giving it a quality that even impresses even today.
In 1909, he convinced the tsar Nicolas II to send him on a trip across the Russian Empire, to document its impressive diversity. It was a 10-year project, during which Gorskii took over 10 000 pictures, and it ended up outlasting the tsar himself, and the Empire for that matter, as the October Revolution swept away the monarchy. In 1918, he emigrated to Paris, where he died in 1944.

The image archive of 1902 negatives which were left was bought by the Library of Congress a few years after the artist's death, and was put online in 2004. You can find it here.




Prokuda-Gorskii's most famous photo is of Leo Tolstoy, dated 1908.


But I prefer this monumental, megalomaniac and modest project of documenting Imperial Russia, which at the time was larger than the USSR ever came to be. The diversity of the people, and the shockingly modern colors of their portraits, make them impossible to forget. They are our contemporaries, now that they stopped hiding between the unfocused black-and-whiteness.
They are almost too present.

Austrian (probably meaning also Polish and of other origins) prisoners somewhere in Russia. It's really worth seeing a high-resolution image.


Here he is, Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii. In a landscape that is (eerily?) ours.
PS. The amazing color bars that appear on some of the pictures are the result of Prokudin-Gorskii's ingenious process, which consisted in taking three subsequent, monochromatic photographs, one with a green filter, one with blue and one with red. He then superimposed the three projections using lamps with a corresponding filter system. I adore these frames, unfortunately some of the images needed additional computer editing (by the Library of Congress) and in this version were cropped.
