Chief Charlot

We bring Indian Chief week to a close here at OPOD with this fine picture of Chief Charlot. He was a very interesting figure, and leader of the Salish of Montana from 1870 to 1910. He tried to live peacefully with the White Man, but was treated harshly. He had a great speech about his trials, and an excerpt is below:

"We befriended him, and showed the fords and defiles of our lands. We owe him nothing. He owes us more than he will pay. His laws never gave us a blade of grass nor a tree nor a duck nor a grouse nor a trout. You know that he comes as long as he lives, and takes more and more, and dirties what he leaves."

Mojave Chiefs

Today's picture features a group of Mojave Indian Chiefs in Arizona. The picture was taken in 1887. I like the picture because the men are very well armed, each with a rifle and gun belt. I find it interesting that the men are dressed more like cowboys than Indians. They have western hats, boots, and bandannas. Once can only wonder the stories they could tell.

Coolidge with Indian Maiden

Today we have a picture of Calvin Coolidge meeting with an Indian delegation. Have you noticed that Coolidge never looks happy in a picture. I don't think he was really into the whole Washington social scene.

How about we shake things up a little bit with an unannounced contest. What is the name of the book being presented to Coolidge? I will check back this evening and see if anyone has gotten it.

Sitting Bull

Indian Chief week continues here at OPOD with this fine picture of Sitting Bull. I like this one because most of the pictures of him are straight on, and this one is more of a profile shot. The picture was taken in 1888.

President Coolidge

This picture was taken in 1925, and shows Calvin Coolidge on the lawn of the White House with a group of Native Americans. No one looks too happy in the picture.

Geronimo

This picture shows Apache Chief Geronimo. He was one of the men in the group shot from yesterday. He was probably one of the more recognizable men in the photograph. This picture was taken in 1903.

Indians!

Today we feature a picture of a group of Indians. We are going to shake things up a little so read the rules carefully. You must name at least three of the Indians, and identify them on the picture, with designators Indian 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Indians are numbered left to right. So Indian on the far left is Indian 1. NOW, if your initials are N. M. you must identify all SIX Indians to win. If your initials are NOT N. M. you may win by correctly identifying any three Indians. Let the Games Begin!
