THEME DAY: DOORWAYS • The current Manila Cathedral in the old walled city of Intramuros was finished in 1958. It is the eighth church and sixth cathedral to stand on the site since 1581. Its main doors, over which a magnificent arch rises, each has four bronze panels created by the Italian sculptors Alessandro Monteleone (1897–1967) and Francesco Nagni (1897–1977). According to the Manila Cathedral website, the eight bronze relief panels represent important episodes in the history of the cathedral. I wish it had more information than that—I would love to know what events these panels depict.

Not itsy-bitsy

I think Mr. Spider wants coffee and donuts from Go Nuts Donuts as his Halloween treat.

6:07PM UPDATE: Oh wow. I've just noticed in my Dashboard that this is my 500th post! I've been waiting forever for it and almost missed it. Geez…

Lake Louise Headband/Happy Halloween!

Lulu is having a sitewide sale through November 2, 2009 - 20% off everything including the knitting booklets or patterns at my store in print or as .PDF downloads. The coupon code is FALLBACK.

Dale of Norway's Lake Louise Headband

I've  had success previously substituting Nature Spun Sport for Heilo in Dale of Norway  patterns by going up one needle size. Unfortunately this equation does not work with Elann's Peruvian Highland Sport. Previously I tried it with the Dale Whistler sweater and my row gauge was way off. I tried it again with this Lake Louise headband (in the same pattern booklet as the Whistler pattern). (Remember that the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again but expecting different results!)

The headband turned out quite wide but it is for DH so it will work. It is also pretty stiff with two layers so it can be used as neck protection as well worn like a neck gaiter. He couldn't come up with a Halloween costume for his office party so he decided to wear all his Dale of Norway stuff and be an Olympic skiier. I'd given away all the Dale hats I'd made previously so I made this one in a jiffy. I'll try to get a photo of him wearing everything at once.

Bubbles doesn't get any Halloween candy so she's celebrating by eating lettuce instead. I had to rush to take this photo before she started in on the pumpkins.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I don't know why I by the cats toys. Seriously. I could spend hundreds of bucks at PetSmart and they would much rather play with the cardboard boxes I get deliveries in. Spooky has claimed this box, and she won't let the other cat's use it. She even eats her food in it. I call it her "Kitty-Cat-Hotel."

Paving stones

My favorite road in the Ateneo de Manila University. Except in very special circumstances, vehicles are not allowed on it.

Stacked

The regular academic year in the Philippines begins in June and ends in March. Most colleges and universities divide these ten months into two semesters, though a few offer trimesters. For those with only two semesters, the last two weeks of October and the first week of November (with some variation) are usually the semestral break. While students and faculty are on vacation, other school personnel use the time to clean, repair and renovate classrooms.

New Source for Glove Needles

In yesterday's link list I forgot one of my favorite new discoveries, 4" long glove needles for sale from Spin Blessing. They are the KA Classic Bamboo and they come in sizes 0 to size 5 which should take care of most glove knitting needs.

This is the view from my front door today. I plan to knit non-stop and watch chick flicks. The only way this day can get any better is if Colin Firth or George Clooney shows up to make a fire in the wood stove and bring me a mug of hot chocolate.

Links, Charity Hats & O-Wool

Today's Color Links:

Paton's blog is just starting a stranded tam KAL. The free pattern uses 5 colors of Paton's Classic Wool and size 7 dpns. I'd join if I hadn't just finished a tam.

In my continuing quest for more worsted weight stranded patterns I queued the free pattern for the Vineland Mittens which uses 2 colors of worsted weight yarn.

I just found out Lucy Neatby has a blog, Happy Stitches.

The lovely and prolific Spillyjane has several new stranded mitten and sock patterns for sale as well as the free Quo Vadis mittens that use 6 colors of worsted weight yarn from your stash.

Macarons Socks - Kristin Nicholas has a new pattern as a Knitty surprise - the slipper socks (with purchased soles) aren't stranded but do use a lot of colors. I have to check out her new knitting book, Color by Kristin: Designing Your Own Beautiful Knits.

I've seen the incredible stranded Mirror, Mirror socks before from Janel Laidman's most recent sock book but now you can buy her patterns separately.

Denise sent me these beautiful hats to be sold in our next pet rabbit rescue garage sale. She even went to the trouble of including labels on how to care for the hats. Aren't they lovely? Her workmanship is impeccable and I know these will be popular at the sale. Thanks so much Denise!

Check out the four new colors of O~Wool Classic 2-ply yarn from Vermont Organic Fiber Company. I especially love the lilac at the bottom. Marin from O~Wool sent me these and I'm going to design a Latvian-style mitten with a pointy tip, peasant thumb, and braids by the end of November.

Spirals

Since we're already at Sofitel Philippine Plaza, let's take a peek at Spiral, the hotel's flagship restaurant. It is one of the most popular buffet restaurants in Metro Manila, with open cooking stations and the widest array of multi-cuisine dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is the lovely spiral staircase that leads from the lobby to the restaurant, and its unusual and very striking spiral sculpture.

In A Sentimental Mood

Sonnet 44
If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,
Injurious distance should not stop my way;
For then despite of space I would be brought,
From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.
No matter then although my foot did stand
Upon the farthest earth removed from thee;
For nimble thought can jump both sea and land
As soon as think the place where he would be.
But, ah, thought kills me that I am not thought,
To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,
But that, so much of earth and water wrought,
I must attend time's leisure with my moan,
Receiving nought by elements so slow,
But heavy tears, badges of either's woe.

(Shakespeare)

One more thing: The bone in the film is a wishbone:
The wishbone, known in anatomy as the furcula, is a sternum bone found in birds which is shaped like the letter Y. It is used as an attachment point for the wing muscles. It is so named because of a tradition: Two people pull on each side of such a bone, and when it breaks, the one who gets the larger part is said to have a wish granted.

The mechanical sculpture in the film is by Arthur Ganson. Some of his stuff is really awe-inspiring. Check this Machine with Artichoke Petal #2

Of course, it may bring to mind other art machines (Rebecca Horn, but also manyothers), but what I really appreciate here is the simplicity. Modest art is something to be cherished. It also reminds me of some of the musical experiences by the Portuguese musician Nuno Rebelo:

Even the really simple ones are really something: Machine with Chinese Fan

Is it kitsch? I don't care.

Shaken, not stirred

From October 21 to December 16, Sofitel Philippine Plaza is hosting themed parties at its luxurious 7Pecados by the Bay bar and club. Last Wednesday's theme was "Casino Royale" and I think even James Bond would have approved of the booth that my husband and I chose. Instead of seats, it has a lounge chair for two. And don't you just love those crystal-beaded walls?

The cover charge, amazingly tiny at only 200 pesos (about US$4), not only gives you entrance to the club. You also get two drinks of your choice, peanuts and wasabi peas are already on your table, and servers with trays laden with various hors d'oeuvre walk around the room offering more filling treats to all the guests. The theme was also applied to the drinks—you have to choose your drinks from the bar list at the entrance and instead of drink stubs, you're given playing cards which correspond to your choices. I used my 6 for the Mai Tai (dark and white rum, curacao, grenadine, pineapple juice, orgeat syrup and lime juice) and the 10 was for a Long Island Iced Tea (sweet and sour mix, vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple sec and Coca-Cola).

The smaller aces of spades in the photo above, each labeled with a face value of 1000 pesos, was for one of the night's main attractions: casino games. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) lent 7Pecados a Black Jack table with two dealers (cute dude—I like his dimples)…

and two slot machines. Of course, this was all just for fun so no real money was involved.

The casino games were very popular that night. I'm glad I got photos before the crowds arrived. The handsome 27˝ iMacs were quite popular too. Just for World Wide Wednesdays —WWW@7Pecados, which is the party series' name—the bar also becomes a mini internet hub.

And what's a party without music? The band was good—they had everyone swaying to the beat even as they were playing games or chatting away with friends. I asked the girl at the reception table their name, but my liquor-soaked brain didn't retain it. (Thanks to a friend in Sofitel, I now have their name: Blind Curve.)

I couldn't resist this next shot. The ceiling of 7Pecados is completely covered with mirror tiles and I found it fascinating. So now I have an unusual portrait of me and my husband. And the guy in the next booth.

The next World Wide Wednesdays themed party at 7Pecados by the Bay is on November 4: Knock Out Night. (I just hope that's not what I'll be like—knocked out—at the end of the evening.) Who wants to come? Everyone's invited!
